Toward Better Intraseasonal and Seasonal Prediction: Verification and Evaluation of the NOGAPS Model Forecasts
نویسندگان
چکیده
Intraseasonal and seasonal prediction provides important information for decision-making and resource management, and has received increased attention in recent years. Despite substantial progress in numerical modeling in the past few decades, skillful seasonal prediction remains a challenge for many models. Verification and evaluation of model forecasts can offer users necessary information on the model predictive skills and uncertainties, and provide model development teams with useful information on model improvements.

NOGAPS-ALPHA model simulations of stratospheric ozone during the SOLVE2 campaign
This paper presents three-dimensional prognostic O3 simulations with parameterized gas-phase photochemistry from the new NOGAPS-ALPHA middle atmosphere forecast model. We compare 5-day NOGAPS-ALPHA hindcasts of stratospheric O3 with satellite and DC-8 aircraft measurements for two cases during the SOLVE II campaign: (1) the cold, isolated vortex during 11–16 January 2003; and (2) the rapidly de...
متن کاملToward shadowing in operational weather prediction
This is a report on a NICOP funded project to investigate the feasibility and benefits of computing shadowing trajectories with the Naval Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS). Previous results had established that an algorithm to compute shadowing trajectories was successful for a simple quasi-geostrophic (T21L3) model, without using any adjoint information. The first aim w...
متن کاملParameterization of middle atmospheric water vapor photochemistry for high-altitude NWP and data assimilation
This paper describes CHEM2D-H2O, a new parameterization of H2O photochemical production and loss based on the CHEM2D photochemical-transport model of the middle atmosphere. This parameterization accounts for the altitude, latitude, and seasonal variations in the photochemical sources and sinks of water vapor over the pressure region from 100–0.001 hPa (∼16–90 km altitude). A series of free-runn...
متن کاملMulti-model Ensembling of Probabilistic Streamflow Forecasts: Role of Predictor State Space in skill evaluation
Seasonal streamflow forecasts contingent on climate information are essential for shortterm planning and for setting up contingency measures during extreme years. Recent research shows that operational climate forecasts obtained by combining different General Circulation Models (GCM) have improved predictability/skill in comparison to the predictability from single GCMs [Rajagopalan et al., 200...
متن کاملAdvanced Numerical Methods for NWP Models
The long-term goal of this research is to construct the Navy’s next-generation global numerical weather prediction (NWP) model using new numerical methods specifically designed for distributedmemory and vector computers. To distinguish it from the current Navy global atmospheric model, the navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS), we shall refer to this new model as the Na...
